“Mo’ Than 50: Disrupting Men’s Health for the 50+ Generation”

November is Movember, a global movement dedicated to men’s health, focusing on mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

As the women of WUSUT, this month, we want to spotlight men aged 50+ and how we can disrupt aging by focusing on total well-being across all dimensions of life.

WAKE UP!

The statistics are clear—men’s health is facing a serious crisis, and it goes beyond just physical well-being. For men over 50, the risks grow while support often decreases. As the global population of men aged 60+ continues to rise, shrinking younger generations are putting increased pressure on healthcare systems.

Did you know that men are significantly less likely to seek help for both mental health challenges and physical conditions like prostate cancer? 60% of men skip regular check-ups, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Additionally, the World Health Organization states that 70% of Non-Communicable Diseases, which are the leading causes of death, are preventable through lifestyle changes.

This makes taking proactive action more urgent than ever.

Movember shines a spotlight on these pressing issues. Using the 5 Dimensions of Well-being as our framework, we must rethink how we approach men’s health and make meaningful changes now.

SHAKE UP!

It’s time to break free from outdated mindsets! Health is not just about surviving—it’s about thriving. Men over 50 face unique challenges in physical, emotional, and social health, but the “tough it out” mentality is damaging. We need to shake up the belief that aging means decline or that talking about health is a sign of weakness.

Let’s redefine masculinity and wellness.

It’s not about “fighting through it” alone, but about actively managing well-being across our 5 critical dimensions:

  1. Physical – Prioritize regular checkups, prostate screenings, and exercise.
  2. Emotional – Open up about mental health struggles. Silence can be deadly, especially when there is little room for expressing how we feel.
  3. Social – Stay connected with friends, family, and communities for better support. Grow and nurture a new network of connections.

Purposeful – Find fulfillment beyond work by engaging in passions, hobbies, and meaningful projects. Share experiences and expertise, inspire and get inspired.

  1. Financial – Reduce stress by planning for a secure future and understanding long-term health costs. Seek updated information about future financial opportunities.
  2. If we don’t change the narrative around men’s health, the consequences will ripple through society and organizations alike.

THRIVE!

Here are some practical ways to support men’s health during Movember and beyond:

  1. Start with a Check-Up: Encourage men aged 50+ to schedule a comprehensive health check. Early detection saves lives, particularly when it comes to prostate cancer.
  2. Prioritize Mental Health: Mental health support can be life-changing. Reach out to a counselor or explore workplace well-being programs that support emotional resilience.
  3. Get Active: Regular movement is key—whether it’s walking, biking, or joining a fitness group. It’s good for the body and mind.
  4. Connect with Others: Isolation is detrimental to well-being. Make time for social gatherings or join groups that align with your interests to maintain a healthy social life.
  5. Talk About It: Having open conversations about health—whether at home, in the workplace, or in your community—removes the stigma and encourages others to take action.
